Director General Tsai's Proclamation Ceremony

From October of 2007, the Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) under the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL) has been looking for nominee for the position of Director General. After 5 months of rigid selection process, the board of directors of NARL has finally resolved to cordially invite Dr. Din-Ping Tsai to fill the coveted position of director general of ITRC. His proclamation ceremony was held on March 27.

Director General Tsai serves concurrently the Distinguished Professor of Department of Physics at National Taiwan University. He received his Ph. D degree in Physics from University of Cincinnati, USA in 1990. He was elected as the chair and vice chair of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) Taiwan chapter for the 2004 & 2005 and 1996 & 1997, respectively. He was invited to join Research Center for Applied Sciences, Academia Sinica as an Adjunct Research Fellow in 2006. He is a Fellow of International Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE), Optical Society of America (OSA), American Physical Society (APS), and Physics Society of R.O.C., and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is a member of technical committee of IEEE/LEOS nanophotonics. He is also a member of the OSA Fellows and Honorary Members Committee.

Director General Tsai's current research interests are nano-photonics, near-field optics and plasmonics. He is the author and coauthor of 92 SCI journal papers, 32 book chapters and conference papers, and 32 technical reports and articles. He had 26 patents in USA, Japan, Canada, Germany and Taiwan. He had four technologies transfer to three different companies in last three years. He has received a number of prestigious awards including "Outstanding Achievement Award in Science and Technology" from Executive Yuan of Republic of China (R.O.C.), "Excellent Industry-Academy Cooperation Award" from Ministry of Education of R.O.C., "Distinguished Optical Engineering Award"from The Optical Engineering Society of R.O.C.,"Fu Ssu-Nien Award," "Outstanding Research Contribution Award" and "Excellent Senior Teacher Award" from NTU, "Excellent Contribution on Optical Technology Award" from Optical Engineering Society of R.O.C. (ROCEOS), "Outstanding Research Award" from Taiwan Information Storage Association (TISA), "Distinguished Alumni Award" from Soochow University, Taiwan, "Golden Pen Award" from Electronics Monthly, Taiwan. He was invited as an invited speaker for the international conference or symposium more than 42 times in last five years. He serves as a member of editorial boards of "Plasmonics" (Springer Journal Publication), "JEOS Rapid Publication" (Journal of the European Optical Society: Rapid publications - ISSN 1990-2573), "Opto-Electronics Letters" and "Opto News & Letters," respectively. He is the chief editor of "Taiwan Nano Newsletters." He has served as chairs and committee members of several international conferences and symposiums, such as ISOM, ODS, ISOS, ISPS, NFO, APNFO, SPIE, etc. He is member of the boards of Optical Engineering Society of R. O. C., Taiwan Nanotechnology Industrialization Development Association and Taiwan Information Storage Association, respectively.

Under the Director General Tsai's leadership, we believe that Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) will intend to be more innovative and contributive to Taiwan's science and technology, and develop itself into a research center with international renown.
